UN call for action in African Republic over fears of genocide

The Central African Republic is at risk of spiraling into genocide as armed groups incite Christians and Muslims against each other in the virtually lawless country, senior United Nations officials told the Security Council on Friday. http://www.nytimes.com/2013/11/02/world/africa/central-african-republic-un-is-warned-about-genocide-threat.html?ref=world The country has slipped into chaos since rebels seized the capital and ousted President François Bozizé in March. Human rights groups say both sides may have committed war crimes. “We are seeing armed groups killing people under the guise of their religion,” said Adama Dieng, the United Nations’ special adviser on the prevention of genocide. “If we don’t act now and decisively, I will not exclude the possibility of a genocide occurring.”
